ESL Teaching ESL is incredibly rewarding and fun. However, there are also challenges as well. Language barriers and cultural differences will be a teacher's greatest obstacle. Fortunately, by turning the tables and using the students' own pop culture, teaching becomes a lot easier.
Relating to your students is actually a universal rule in teaching, especially in CELLA. The way our teachers relate to students is to talk about things they know or do things they are interested in, related to English studies.
Take for example K-pop. K-pop is so ingrained within Korean society that nearly every student - regardless of age - knows all the popular songs. Ever had a whole class sing Girls Generation's "Gee" or 2PM's "Hands up"? Or see them dance to the tune of these and other K-pop music? It's quite a treat to see.
By dancing, students learn English expressions related to dance and music. They can also interact with their co-dancers in English, thereby enhancing their speaking and interpersonal skills. More importantly, they get to enjoy the whole activity and bond with their co-students and teachers.
K-pop dance activity happens in CELLA Uni Campus every Tuesday and Thursday.
